Sustainability
What makes jewellery truly sustainable, the honest factors behind every piece, and how to shop for them with confidence.

The basics
It’s not one badge, but five things
Sustainability in jewellery isn’t a single label or a buzzword. It’s the sum of five choices behind every piece: the stone, the metal, the making, the packaging, and how long it’s built to last. Here’s how to read each one.
Why it matters
The true cost of conventional jewellery
Mined metals and stones come at a price that isn’t on the tag.
-
Scarred land
Mining for diamonds and metals can clear forests and disturb whole ecosystems and communities.
-
Polluted water
Extraction and chemical processing can contaminate the freshwater that people and wildlife rely on.
-
Heavy carbon
Digging, hauling, and refining are energy-intensive, carrying a significant carbon toll.
A buyer’s guide
The five marks of sustainable jewellery
What to look for in any piece, and, honestly, how we measure up.
-
The stone
Look for Lab-grown or reclaimed, never freshly mined, with an independent certificate.
At Margot Vane Every diamond is lab-grown and certified by GIA, IGI, or GCAL. Why lab-grown →
-
The metal
Look for Recycled or responsibly sourced gold and platinum, to avoid new mining.
At Margot Vane Our 14k & 18k gold and platinum are responsibly sourced.
-
The making
Look for Made to order or in small batches, so nothing is mass-produced or left as deadstock.
At Margot Vane Every piece is made to order, created only once you order it, so nothing is overproduced. Our process →
-
The packaging
Look for Minimal, recyclable, and plastic-free.
At Margot Vane Our packaging is minimal, recyclable, and plastic-free.
-
The lifespan
Look for Built to last, and able to be repaired, resized, and restored, not disposable.
At Margot Vane Crafted to be passed down, and we repair, resize, and restore to keep it in use.
Make it last
The greenest piece is the one you keep
A diamond is forever, the setting just needs a little care. Looking after a piece, and mending rather than replacing it, is the most sustainable choice any of us can make.
Clean it gently
Warm water, a little mild soap, and a soft brush bring back the sparkle. Skip harsh chemicals.
Check it now and then
A quick look over the setting keeps the stone secure for years to come.
Mend, don’t replace
Resize and repair to keep a piece in use for decades, worn, not left in a drawer.
Our standard
Built to tread lightly
We won’t pretend perfection, no honest maker can. But from the first sketch, every Margot Vane piece is made to be beautiful, ethical, and kept for generations. That, to us, is the whole point of an heirloom.
Always improving
Where we’re headed
We’d rather be honest than greenwash, so we won’t claim what isn’t true yet. Here’s what we’re actively working on.
- In research
How to bring recycled gold and platinum into our pieces, without compromising quality.
- Exploring
Lower-impact shipping and even leaner, fully plastic-free packaging.
- Ongoing
Greater transparency across everyone who helps bring your piece to life.
Good to know
Sustainability, answered
What actually makes jewellery sustainable?
No single thing, but the five factors together: the stone, the metal, how it’s made, how it’s packaged, and how long it’s built to last. The more a piece ticks, the lighter its footprint.
Are lab-grown diamonds really sustainable?
Yes, because they require no mining, they avoid the land disruption, water pollution, and human cost that extraction can carry. They’re a real diamond, simply grown rather than dug.
What are recycled metals?
Gold and platinum refined from existing sources, old jewellery or industry by-products, rather than newly mined ore. It keeps precious metal in circulation and reduces demand for mining.
Is sustainable jewellery lower quality or more expensive?
Neither. A lab-grown diamond often gives you more for your budget, and heirloom-quality craft means a piece that lasts for decades rather than one you replace.
What certifications should I look for?
For diamonds, look for an independent report from GIA, IGI, or GCAL. For broader sustainability claims, ask a brand to show its sourcing and materials, transparency is the real test.
What’s the most sustainable choice of all?
Keeping a piece in use. The greenest jewellery is the one you don’t replace, so care for it, and repair or resize rather than buy new.
