Education

Diamond education

Everything you need to choose a diamond with confidence — the 4Cs, certification, shapes, and why we craft only with lab-grown stones.

The fundamentals

The 4Cs

Every diamond is judged on four qualities — cut, colour, clarity, and carat. Together they shape how a stone looks, lasts, and is valued.

Cut — the one that makes it sparkle

Cut is the only C shaped entirely by human hands, and the one that matters most for brilliance. It isn’t the shape of the stone, but how precisely its facets are angled. A well-cut diamond returns light straight back to your eye; if it’s too shallow or too deep, light escapes — and the stone looks flat.

If you remember one thing, prioritise cut.

Anatomy

The parts of a diamond

A diamond’s proportions decide how it handles light. These are the parts that shape its brilliance.

Table Crown Girdle Pavilion Culet
  • Table

The large flat facet on top — the window that lets light in and back out.

  • Crown

The angled upper section, where much of a diamond’s fire is created.

  • Girdle

The slim band at the widest point, held by the setting.

  • Pavilion

The lower cone that reflects light back up to your eye.

  • Culet

The tiny point or facet at the very bottom of the stone.

Certification

Verified, not promised

A diamond certificate is an independent grading report — a stone examined and graded by a gemological laboratory against the 4Cs, its measurements, and more. It’s your assurance that the quality you’re told is the quality you receive.

Every Margot Vane diamond is certified by one of the three most trusted laboratories in the world. Your report travels with your stone — useful for insurance, and for comparing one diamond against another with confidence.

  • GIA
  • IGI
  • GCAL

Why lab-grown

The same diamond, created responsibly

We craft only with lab-grown diamonds. Grown in controlled conditions, they are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds — the same brilliance, the same hardness, the same beauty — created without mining, at a fairer price.

Our choice

Lab-grown

  • Identical to mined diamonds — chemically & optically
  • Grown in weeks under controlled conditions
  • No mining; a lighter footprint
  • Certified by GIA, IGI, or GCAL
  • More diamond for your budget

Mined

  • Formed over billions of years underground
  • Finite, extracted from the earth
  • Identical look — at a higher price
  • Also lab-certified

Shapes

Find a shape you love

A diamond’s shape is its outline — and usually the first thing people choose. Each catches light in its own way.

A simple way in

How to choose your diamond

  1. 01

    Start with cut

It’s what makes a diamond sparkle. Prioritise a strong cut over sheer size — a smaller, well-cut stone will outshine a larger dull one.

  2. 02

    Pick a shape you love

Shape is personal. Choose the outline that feels like you — round for classic brilliance, or oval, emerald, pear and beyond.

  3. 03

    Balance the rest to budget

With cut and shape set, trade carat, colour, and clarity to land the look you want at the price you want.

  4. 04

    Insist on certification

Only choose a diamond with an independent report — GIA, IGI, or GCAL. We include one with every stone.

Keep it brilliant

Caring for your diamond

  • Clean it gently

Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft brush bring back the sparkle. Skip harsh chemicals and abrasives.

  • Store it safely

Keep it in a soft-lined box, apart from other pieces — a diamond can scratch almost anything, including another diamond.

  • Check it now and then

Have the setting looked over periodically so the stone stays secure. Margot Vane rings include lifetime care.

Good to know

Frequently asked

What are the 4Cs?

Cut, colour, clarity, and carat — the four qualities every diamond is graded on. Cut governs sparkle, colour how white it reads, clarity its natural marks, and carat its weight.

What is diamond certification, and why does it matter?

It is an independent grading report from a gemological laboratory, confirming a diamond’s 4Cs and measurements. It means the quality is verified rather than simply claimed. Every Margot Vane diamond is certified by GIA, IGI, or GCAL.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined ones. The only difference is origin: they are grown in a lab rather than mined.

How are lab-grown and mined diamonds different?

They are the same in every way that shows — brilliance, hardness, certification. The difference is how they form: mined diamonds grow underground over billions of years, while lab-grown diamonds are created in weeks under controlled conditions, without mining and at a fairer price.

How do I choose the right diamond?

Start with cut (it drives sparkle), choose a shape you love, then balance carat, colour, and clarity to your budget — and always insist on an independent certificate.

What is the best cut for an engagement ring?

Cut quality matters more than the shape itself. A well-cut round is the most brilliant, but any shape — oval, emerald, cushion — looks beautiful when the cut is excellent. Choose the outline you love, then choose it well-cut.

How do I read a diamond certificate?

A certificate lists the diamond’s 4Cs, its exact measurements, any fluorescence, and a unique report number you can verify with the lab. We provide the full report with every stone.

Are lab-grown diamonds ethical?

Yes. Because they require no mining, lab-grown diamonds avoid the environmental and human impact associated with extraction — an ethical choice with no compromise on beauty.

How do I care for my diamond?

Clean it gently with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush; store it apart from other jewellery; and have the setting checked periodically so the stone stays secure.
